Empty Words
Matt Sebek over at Joe Sports Fan was emailed a mysterious audio recording from an anonymous source. The source claimed it was a clip of Ron Washington’s inspirational speech in the clubhouse before the Texas Rangers confronted the St. Louis Cardinals (and destiny) in the seventh game of the World Series.
Must not have been much of a speech, considering the outcome.
You can listen for yourselves thanks to Sebek, who posted it after verifying that it was, indeed, the real deal. In it, Washington unleashes a torrent of expletives and tough talk in order to pump up his demoralized team, which had just endured one of the most excruciating losses in baseball history the previous evening.
In one of the more interesting segments, Washington says this about Game Seven starter Chris Carpenter:
“I just came out of that motherfucking press conference up there, and all they want to fucking talk about is Carpenter. And you know what I said? Motherfuck Carp … He pitch ball. Ball cross plate. We’re going to knock the fuck out of
it. We’re not going out there to get his motherfucking pitch count up.”
An unidentified voice (not Washington) alludes to comments Carpenter made earlier in the season about Texas’ chances of winning when he says:
“We owe this fucking pitcher a beat down. He ran his fucking mouth.”
You can listen to the entire rant right here (NSFW):
I would be a little more hostile about this rallying cry – which sounds like a scrawnier version of Samuel L. Jackson delivering his big speech in Pulp Fiction – had the Rangers won the damned game. But they didn’t. So really, these inflammatory words have no weight or meaning. It’s just the empty sound of a desperate coach spitting invective that even he doesn’t believe.
