CONTEST: Win A Commemorative GOLD World Series Jersey or GOLD World Series Hat!!!

CONTEST: Win A Commemorative GOLD World Series Jersey or GOLD World Series Hat!!!

On April 6, 2011 Kyle and I started this site out of a love of Cardinal baseball and the game in general. To both of us, baseball is the ultimate drama, played out in tiny increments across an immense season and peppered with all of the glory, heartache, and frailty of the human experience. Baseball is cut grass and sunshine, cool summer breezes and crackling radios, wide-eyed children and child-like adults. Baseball carries us from one generation to the next, uniting strangers in a universal language of statistics, memories, and undeniable life lessons. In short, baseball is life distilled into poetry.

There are many Cardinal sites out there covering various aspects of Cardinal baseball; some focus on analysis, some on humor, and some on general topics of interest. What we tried to do here is become the blend, providing Cardinal Nation with all of these ingredients in a smorgasbord of wisecracking humor and passionate personal and statistical analysis. I think we’ve mostly accomplished these things so far.

But what a year it’s been! Little did we know that our inaugural year would document so many incredible events and changes to our beloved baseball team! And, on a more personal note, we’ve met so many incredible and knowledgeable fans through this site and our burgeoning Facebook fan page. There really aren’t words to properly describe how humbled and honored we feel to serve such an incredible fan base every day! It’s really a privilege!

We wanted to celebrate our one year anniversary and the start of another magical campaign (12in’12!) with a big prize, and we think we have just the thing! So we are going to provide one lucky winner with a GOLD COMMEMORATIVE WORLD SERIES JERSEY!! That’s right – this is a once-in-a-lifetime collector’s item to wear or display and celebrate one of the most amazing championships ever! Here’s what it looks like:

Nifty, eh?

The runner-up will win a Gold Commemorative World Series hat! Here’s a picture of that:

Here are the rules:

HOW TO WIN

In the comments section of this post, write the name of your favorite Cardinal currently on the club AND why he’s your favorite. You must leave your answers here; we cannot use Facebook for this. Scroll down and use our comments section only for this contest.

Send your friends and family here to vote using the voting button (clicking “like”) embedded in our Disqus commenting system. We have turned on registration in order to prevent cheating (which we dealt with last time).

The contest ends as soon as the first pitch is thrown on April 4th between the Cardinals and the Marlins. The top five comments will be thrown into a hat and a third party will draw the winners for both prizes!

Simple, right?

Hopefully we get some awesome answers from everybody and have some fun! Thanks to everyone who has supported this site! We truly appreciate all of the encouragement and warmth and passion for the game that you have provided for us over this past year! May 2012 be even better!!

My favorite Cardinal is Lance Berkman.  It has nothing to do with his star power, but everything to do with what he stands for.  He doesn’t hold back and tells it like it is no matter the subject.  In this PC world of ours, it’s very refreshing GO CARDINALS 12IN12!

Hard for me to pick a favorite.  If they are a Cardinal I am normally a fan, but I do grow tired of certain guys while they still are a Cardinal (Izzy).

But right now it is narrowed down to Wainwright, Freese, Craig, and Holliday.  All for obvious reasons, but I have to go with Wainwright, because when he has been healthy he can carry this team on his back.  Plus he seems like a good ol country boy.  Hopefully we get back to the WS this year so he and the rest of the guys can dominate again!

My favorite is Freese. He is a great player and young with alot to offer the team.. Freese showed us last year in October that he can handle pressure. And always came through for us in clutch situations… A pretty great hitter. He will go a long way in his career.

My favorite player on the cardinals is Lance Berkman because he had a great come back season with the cards after playing pretty bad on the at the end of his carer on the Astros and barely even playing on the Yankees. I think he should have won the world series MVP because he had 64 at bats and of those 64  he had 20 hits and 2 homers that’s an average of 313 a slugging % of 438 and 11 RBI including his clutch single in game 6 with just one strike left.berkman also did a great job during the regular season with 147 hits and 31 homers. thats why the big puma is my favorit player.

My favorite player would have to be Adam Wainwright, I recall the 2006 Postseason Izzy had an off year and most of us were just getting to know Wainwright. I will never forget Game 7 of the NLCS against the Mets, a final game for a ticket to the World Series. After Yadis clutch home run to give the Cardinals the lead, Wainwright loaded the bases, with two outs left Cardinals killer Beltran comes to the plate. Biting my nails, and breathing loudly, I watched Wainwright send a perfect curveball leaving Beltran baffled and sending the Cardinals to the World Series which they went on to win. Ever since then, I’ve taken a tremendous liking towards Wainwright, he seems to play for the love of the game rather than the fame or fortune. The way he handles every situation thrown to him is awe-inspiring. Both his 2009- 2010 season were Cy Young caliber years and although he wasn’t able to play in 2011, he cheered us all the way to the holding up of the Commissioner Trophy. Wainwright is a player with heart, passion and a love for the game.

Wow, my favorite Cardinal would have to be Adam Wainwright or Matt Holliday. Wainwright is a great pitcher and to me the most important is he is a christian.  He is a great role model and kids should pattern their lives after him. When Adam is pitching I love to see batters bailing out of the box thinking the ball is going to hit them. Then all of a sudden the ball breaks and is on the outside corner. Matt Holliday is a down to earth and simple man. He could be a silent leader for the Cards this year. Over the winter he brought in some of the future Cards(hopefully) and placed them in a hotel and showed the young players around the city. He also had them come over to his house for dinners. After David Freese’s problems with alcohol Matt started being a big brother for David. I really can’t say any one player is my favorite because as long as the player has the birds on the bat, that all it matters to me.

In all honesty, my favorite current Cardinal is Lance Berkman. He was truly the unsung hero of the World Series with his tenth inning hitting. Also, he should  have been the Cardinals MVP, not he who shall not be named. Not to mention his first half MVP-caliber stats. How he didn’t get Cardinals MVP is beyond me. His defense may not be the greatest, and his hitting may not be what it was, but he will always have a special place in my Cardinals-loving heart because of his role in 2011 (even though he was a Killer B…)

Easy answer:  Allen Craig.  In August of 2011, in the midst of the pennant race, Allen & his wife visited my then nine month old daughter in Cardinal Glennon Hospital.  She was recovering from surgery on her skull, followed by a stroke.  You hear about players visiting kids in the hospital all the time, but you really don’t realize how special it is until it’s your child they are visiting.  During a stressful time, that visit put a smile on our face.  Today, my daughter is recovering nicely, and Allen Craig will forever the favorite Cardinal of this family.

  • matthewbpoe

Chris Carpenter.  That’s like asking what’s my favorite play in team history, or favorite radio or t.v. call. It has to be a vet. Even though all of the young talent that is swarming this team has made us forget about the player who shall not be named.  I would have to say Carp.  ALWAYS takes the mound with intensity.  He thinks he has to pitch a shut out.  If you bark at him, he’s right back at you.  If you disrespect him, you’re getting hit with a fastball.  They don’t call him a bulldog because he sits back and waits.  He plays through the pain, doesn’t sit out because he jammed his toe.  Ever since we got him he has been the person we have turned the ball over to when we need that single game.  There’s no way we would have won against the Phillies in game 5 had he not pitched.

My favorite current STL Cardinal is David Freese.  Not only did he prove himself in the 2011 World Series, but the fact that his home grown ability can solidify this newly managed Cardinal team makes him my current favorite.  I believe his strong base protection along with a solid bat will only benefit the Cards coming out of spring training.  I look forward to opening day!

Well, I have to say that David Freese has become my favorite Cardinal–first–how awesome is it that he is a local talent?  Next, the way he played throughout the year to remain a steady Cardinal player, and finally, the way he came through in the last game of the series and ran those bases to come “home” to his team was beyond awesome!  Freese is the ultimate Cardinal!

My favorite Cardinal Player would be #23 David Freese 3rd basemen. My son got cancer in Oct 2010 finally to go into remission in Feb of 2011. During this time frame I owned a Pontiac Firebird 2002 (Last year they put them on Corvette chasis). I had to sell my car to purchase a 4×4 Ford Ranger Red to transport my son through the winter months to and from Cardinal Cancer Center Mercy Hospital. While there Fredbird came into his room. I never in my life watched baseball. In the spring I became a baseball fan. HUGE baseball fan. The cancer center sent us as a family to a game. Not the home opener yet the 2nd home game. OMG. That was beyond entertaining for us. I now have Cardinal stuff all over my truck, my computer room is now all Cardinal decorated up. In May of last year. I met David Freese at Mike Shannon’s for the very first time. He reminds me so much of our son. Semi close in age, manners, and just the overall appearance. I did mention my son’s cancer to him. He responds with I hope everything turns out fine, I’m sure it will. And it did. I spoke so SO highly of this young man. Was telling EVERYONE to follow him closely. Most people just laughed at me. I wasn’t nor did I ever break a smile when they responded like that. I don’t think anyone else deserved the MVP more than he did. Davids recover time from injuries was hand in hand with our son’s cancer recovery. I rejoiced the day my son’s cancer went into remission. I rejoiced and even cried the day the Cardinal’s won the world series cause me and my son was there together. My son just looked over at me and said Mom, Now maybe everyone will start listening to whom to follow in baseball. When David received the MVP award I couldn’t have been any prouder of a young man. WTG. Keep up the wonderful work. See you all in 2012. Go Cards

Lance Berkman!!!! I love his integrity. He only says what he truly feels. Not to dramatize the situation. I mostly love that a lot of people counted him out or medocre. He came out and had the best year of his life. And the best time of his life. When everyone was counting the Cardinals out of the running and Texas was on their way he was offered a trade or to be loaned. He stood his ground and said no I will not be used like that. He wanted to stay where he belonged even if that meant losing the opportunity of a ring.  He is a Cardinal!!! He stood by his team and RedBird Nation. He believed. And he made it happen. I believe that when he chose to stay and fight it gave the guys a renewed hope. They kept working hard knowing that there was going to be a window of opportunity. And when that window opened they all flew in.

My favorite Cardinal player is Molina. He is the greatest catcher in baseball. He very easily could have went with  another team over the winter but decided to stay  with the Cardinals. He is amazing when he fires those balls to get a player out. His accuracy is awesome.I’m a huge Cardinal fan and will be doing my share of screaming this year and many more for all the Cardinals but will scream the loudest for Yadi!

I know I can’t win but I still want to do this for fun. It is hard to pick a favorite for two reasons one is the difference between pitchers and hitters. The second is that there is so many to choose from. But if I had to choose just one it would be Yadier Molina. He is the new face of the franchise, a fan favorite, the best defensive catcher in baseball, good with the bat, clutch, and an all around team player. Pitchers boast of his greatness as do his managers. He is an all star, a gold glover, and in my mind an MVP.Now that he is locked up for good he also shows he is a true Cardinal unlike his friend Mr. Pujols. I am lucky to have witnessed him play and he will go down as one of the greatest catchers and Cardinals of all time.

My favorite Cardinal has to be Allen Craig.. It’s hard to chose just one player from my favorite team, but what is there not to like about Allen Craig. In 2011 he played 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF, and CF this is obviously a guy who wants to help out the Cardinals anyway possible. The Cardinals need to find a place to put him for the foreseeable future, at age 27 his bat needs to be in this lineup. We all saw the power he possesses with four homeruns in fifteen games in the postseason last year. Craig could potentially be a pivotal player for this team for the next five years. God Bless And Good Luck To The Cardinals In 2012. Bring home yet another championship to Saint Louis!

I think we won the world series because of everybody on the team and the help of God because he showed us that miracles actually do happen, there is no best player, they all have amazing abilities at what they do, and that is win championships

Yadi. I’ve liked him since he was our backup catchers….he is consistent and just loves the game. I like him so much I named my dog Yadi!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Asmir-Menkovic/704773482 Asmir Menkovic

My favorite player is Yadi, and the reason is that he is a dedicated player, a slow runner but still one of the best at what he does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Criner/1153501395 Jason Criner

My favorite would have to be the return of Mike Matheny as the manager.  He was a great catcher and has a great attitude in life.  He will be a positive influence on this team.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1092746027 Susan Vance

If I had to pick just one player it would have to be Yadier Molina. I think he is a good all around player, catcher, and pretty interesting to watch play baseball.

  • AlenMenkovic

I would have to say Adam Wainwright, he took us to the world serious once in 2006 and ever since I have taken a liking in him. I believe he has tremendous talen and no one is his Caliber. He inspires me to say you could be the next Ken Griffey, Jr. HAHA
I just want that shirt now if it’s best comment you are after you get back to me on and we shall discuss it on the local radio Ok.
I want that shirt I’m an Aussie in Australia not even an American, we say Plagiarism “Come ON” by Leyton Hewitt

My absolute favorite Cardinal is Skip Schumacher! He is such a hard working ‘team player’! Not to mention he is awesome ‘eye candy’ for this 54 year old grandmother of 7 great all Cardinals fans!!! Happy Birthday to a great site!!

  • Josh Richardson

I’m going with Yadier Molina. It is very clear why we should all love and respect Yadi. He’s a pure bread Cardinal, and has been apart of this organization his entire professional career. I am 24 years old and I myself, am lucky enough to have witnessed him play A-ball for the Peoria Chiefs in 2002 here in my hometown of Peoria, Illinois… What an honor. I could go on for days about his accomplishments and numbers but I will save room for the rest of you Cardinal FAITHFUL

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Fredrick/100000652416317 Nick Fredrick

my favorite Cardinal is David Freese because if it wasn’t for his walk off HR in game 6 of the World Series we wouldn’t have won our 11th title!!!
